Spreading Sweet Smiles throughout the Community

June 06, 2024

Twice a year, smiles are even warmer at Tim Hortons restaurants, with their Smile Cookie campaign brightening up locations across Canada. Freshly baked Smile Cookies appear on their menu for a limited time, with proceeds from every Smile Cookie sold supporting a local charity.

Father-and-son duo, Ajit and Harj Thandi chose to support Burnaby Hospital Foundation for their Smile Cookie campaign because the beloved community hospital is a place where they see their values reflected.

“Burnaby Hospital does important work for our community,” Harj shares. “I was in their Emergency Department recently and it struck me how busy yet efficient they were, all while providing me with compassion and the care that I needed.”

Ajit acquired his first Tim Hortons franchise location in Surrey nearly 30 years ago, expanding to several stores. As his family grew, he downsized the number of locations he owned to just one. 10 years ago, his son, Harj, joined him in the business and they were able to grow to seven locations across the Lower Mainland. Throughout that time, the father-son duo recognized the importance of showing support for their community.

“Anything you can give back – whether through donations, volunteering, acts of kindness or participating in charity events – it is worthwhile,” Harj shares. “Community is a bedrock of our organization and I’m proud that we are able to give back to Burnaby Hospital, a place that values community the same way we do.”

“Our Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign that raised over $14,000 across our restaurants really shows that every dollar counts,” Ajit says, with a smile lighting up his face. Their donation goes towards supporting Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s redevelopment campaign, which helps bring much-needed modern equipment to the upgraded hospital.

Participating in several fundraising campaigns throughout the year, Ajit and Harj are community supporters who have been able to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for various charities.

“One very enjoyable part of what we do is connect so closely with our guests and community,” says Harj. “We donate coffee, baked goods, lunch items and our time to local fundraisers, kids’ sports matches and other local events. These are the things that really help bring people together where we are all one”.

Ajit and Harj encourage residents to get involved in their upcoming charity initiatives, including the second annual Holiday Smile Cookie week in December 2024 at all Tim Hortons restaurants.
