One Patient’s Story of Care Across Generations
For many residents, Burnaby Hospital is more than just a place for care. It is a part of the community and a trusted presence through life’s unexpected challenges. One local patient, Lilia, has experienced this firsthand, calling Burnaby home since 1996 and having visited the hospital numerous times over the years. From teenage visits for stomach pains to welcoming her two daughters in 2008 and 2012, and even undergoing procedures such as gallbladder and ovarian cyst removal, Burnaby Hospital has been there at every stage of her life.
Her connection to the hospital extends beyond major medical events. She recalls visits for a concussion and other routine care, each time finding a team ready to provide support with compassion and professionalism. “It’s the closest hospital to us, and it’s always been part of our lives,” Lilia shares. “The staff are caring, understanding, and will support you no matter why you came.”
Lilia’s most recent visit to the Emergency Department, just after the New Year, highlighted the hospital’s ongoing commitment to care. Arriving early in the morning, she found the department surprisingly quiet, a small relief in what can often be a stressful experience. From the triage nurse to the registration team and the fast-track area staff, she felt welcomed and well cared for. The team quickly arranged an x-ray and provided clear answers, ensuring she knew the next steps for follow-up care with her family doctor and specialists.
Reflecting on her experiences, she emphasizes the vital role Burnaby Hospital plays in the community. “You hear stories about hospitals in other areas struggling to stay open due to staffing shortages,” she says. “I can’t imagine going through an emergency without access to immediate care. Burnaby Hospital is a lifeline for families. It is an essential part of our community.”
Grateful for the care she and her family have received over the years, Lilia has found a heartfelt way to give back. This For the Love of Burnaby week, she is crocheting purple heart pins and donating them to the hospital as a symbol of appreciation and support. It is a small gesture with a big message, one that reflects the deep connection between Burnaby Hospital and the community it serves.
Her story is a reminder of the importance of local healthcare facilities staffed by dedicated professionals who bring compassion, expertise, and reassurance to every patient. For Lilia and countless others, Burnaby Hospital isn’t just a building. It is a trusted partner in health across generations and at every stage of life.
