Letter: In my absence, these wonderful nurses did everything I wanted to do, but could not.
Having a dear family member in palliative care is a crushing experience. Living in another province, and having COVID-19 prevent me from travelling, added another layer of despair.
The caring and attentive staff of 2D helped to make this struggle easier. The remarkable nurses took such good care of my aunt, Nellie Novak. I was encouraged to call for updates as often as I liked. When my aunt could not hold a phone, these thoughtful nurses held it to her ear so I could say my final ‘goodbye’ and I love you’. And when she was no longer rousable, they continued to tell her that I called and that I love her.
In my absence, these wonderful nurses did everything I wanted to do, but could not.
Thank you to each and every nurse in 2D. Even those who did not have a direct hand in her care still had time for a word of encouragement when I called. A special thank you to Bella, Maggie, Donna, Vania and Gwen.
To Dr Hubert, thank you for your tender and compassionate care of our aunt. Your many phone calls to explain her status was greatly appreciated. You had such patience for me while I struggled to think clearly.
This entire unit not only took care of our aunt, you took care of the hearts and souls of her family.
With utmost respect,
Theresa McMurray and family.
