How Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s Leadership is Paving the Way for Women in the Non-Profit Sector
In the Lower Mainland’s non-profit sector, two women, Kristy James and Danielle Sleiman, are leaving an unforgettable mark on Burnaby Hospital Foundation and shaping the future of philanthropy in their community. Through their leadership, passion, and commitment to make a difference, Kristy and Danielle have not only propelled the Foundation to new heights but have also set a powerful example for women in philanthropy across the region.
Kristy James, the Foundation’s President and CEO, was recently honoured with two prestigious recognitions: the BCIT Distinguished Alumni Award and the 2025 Influential Women in Business award from Business in Vancouver. These honours reflect the impact she’s had. Under Kristy’s leadership, the Foundation’s revenue grew from $2.5 million to $13 million in just seven years.
Kristy’s influence goes beyond fundraising, extending into mentorship and community involvement. She’s committed to empowering other women in philanthropy, taking pride in mentoring the next generation of leaders. Her volunteer work with organizations like the Pacific Assistance Dog Society (PADS) and Family Services of the North Shore reflects her commitment to building a stronger, more connected community, one where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Danielle Sleiman, the Foundation’s Vice President of Development, has also been recognized for her work and has been named as one of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy’s (AHP) 40 Under 40 and also awarded one of Business in Vancouver’s 2024 40 Under 40.
As the campaign manager for the Foundation’s campaign in support of Burnaby Hospital redevelopment, Danielle played a crucial role in surpassing the $30 million goal in just three years, despite the trials posed by the pandemic. “The impact of our work goes far beyond a donation or a campaign goal,” she reflects. “It’s about fostering a culture of giving, where people understand that they can have a real impact on the lives of their neighbours. I’m proud to be part of that legacy.”
Danielle’s passion for empowering others is evident in her work both within the Foundation and in the broader philanthropic community. Whether it’s guiding and helping to shape emerging professionals or co-teaching fundraising courses, Danielle remains focused on building up the next generation of leaders.
Together, Kristy and Danielle are transforming Burnaby Hospital Foundation all while setting the stage for a new generation of women in the non-profit world. Their shared commitment to giving back and empowering others is a testament to the incredible influence women have in shaping the future. Congratulations to these two leaders for their well-deserved recognition.
