Empathy in Action: Mandy Li’s Journey of Volunteerism at Burnaby Hospital

April 04, 2024

With 121 volunteer hours accrued, Mandy Li is no stranger to Burnaby Hospital. The 4th-year undergraduate student studying pharmacology at the University of British Columbia has had dreams of becoming a doctor for as early as she can remember. “Volunteering in Burnaby Hospital has helped me confirm that this is the career I want to pursue,” Mandy explains. “There is something so special about having an immense amount of knowledge and being able to help someone. I applied to volunteer at Burnaby Hospital as soon as I was old enough and I was super excited to get involved.”

Mandy’s journey began in the hospital gift shop in early 2020, brimming with enthusiasm to lend a helping hand. However, like many, her plans were interrupted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing a temporary pause on her volunteer work. Yet, with resilience and determination, Mandy returned to the hospital as soon as it was safe, shifting focus to the Maternity Clinic and ultimately finding her place in the newly developed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cuddler program.

Every interaction, whether it’s a heartfelt conversation with a patient or a tender moment spent cradling newborns in the NICU, has left an indelible mark on Mandy’s heart. She reflects on the profound impact of small acts of compassion and the ripple effect they can create in the world.

Moreover, Mandy sees first-hand the vital role donors play in sustaining and enhancing our healthcare system. Their generosity fuels innovation, expands access to care, and ultimately benefits the entire community. “As we look towards the future, I’m filled with excitement for the upcoming developments at Burnaby Hospital. This investment helps the healthcare system run smoothly and benefits everyone in the community, including the donors themselves.”

As Mandy continues to pursue her aspirations in the medical field, she extends her heartfelt gratitude to the community hospital that has played a pivotal role in shaping her confidence and collaborative skills. With each volunteer hour dedicated to Burnaby Hospital, Mandy embodies the spirit of compassion and service, leaving a legacy of kindness in her wake.
