Celebrating Community and Care: Burnaby Hospital Foundation 50/50 Winner

October 10, 2024

Meet Dr. Frances Chow, an anesthesiologist at Burnaby Hospital and recent winner of Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s 50/50 raffle. Dr. Chow plays a vital role in patient care at Burnaby Hospital, where she is responsible for preoperative assessments, optimizing patient conditions, and providing anesthesiology care from the start of anesthesia to recovery. Her journey into medicine was inspired by her father, a businessman who had always dreamed of becoming a physician. Dr. Chow found her calling in anesthesiology during medical school, captivated by its intricate blend of pharmacology, physiology, and physics.

“I feel grateful and privileged to be a physician at Burnaby Hospital,” she shares. “Every day, I have the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives.”

When asked about her motivation to participate in the 50/50 raffle, Dr. Chow expressed a desire to support Burnaby Hospital Foundation. “I thought it was a great opportunity to contribute while also having a bit of fun,” she said. Upon discovering she was the raffle winner, Dr. Chow felt a mix of thrill and surprise. “It was completely unexpected, but a very welcomed event!”

The funds raised through the 50/50 raffle will support the redevelopment of Burnaby Hospital. Dr. Chow believes the redevelopment will significantly help the community by enhancing the hospital’s capacity and medical technology to serve the growing population of Burnaby. “I’m particularly looking forward to increased bed capacity, modernized working spaces, and updated medical equipment,” she notes. “These improvements will allow us to provide state-of-the-art medical and surgical care to our patients, which is something I am very excited and grateful for.”

With her raffle winnings, Dr. Chow plans to contribute to Foundation’s auction at the upcoming gala: Bourbon Street Nights, as well as invest in furthering her medical education. “We all need to be at our best so patients can receive exemplary care and achieve great outcomes,” she explains.

Dr. Chow emphasizes the importance of supporting the Foundation. “Being a good doctor is important, but so is being an empathetic human being. We need to help those who are less fortunate. Do what you can – give what you can, and it will be returned in many positive ways.”

Her hopes for the future of Burnaby Hospital are ambitious yet grounded. “I envision it as a model community hospital that not only provides quality medical care but also fosters a sense of community, connection, and hope for future generations.”
