Celebrating Betty Beedie: A Legacy of Support for Burnaby Hospital

May 05, 2024

Burnaby Hospital Foundation is deeply honoured to commemorate the upcoming 90th birthday of one of our most loyal supporters – Betty Beedie!

In 1968, as our community hospital was beginning to thrive, Betty and her late husband, Keith Beedie, were building their first home in the heart of Burnaby. Little did they know, this humble start would mark the beginning of a lifelong connection with Burnaby Hospital. Over the years, Betty and Keith shared many meaningful moments at Burnaby Hospital, including welcoming their son, Ryan, into the world.

Betty has now spent over five decades living in Burnaby and has had many opportunities to support the hospital. In 1995, the couple established the Keith and Betty Beedie Foundation to facilitate their philanthropic goals. This foundation has since become a cornerstone of support for the community, including Burnaby Hospital, and their generosity has created impact far and wide, touching countless lives.

Betty’s support of the Foundation has been significant, positively impacting thousands of lives. In 2009, The Beedie Foundation contributed over $1 million towards bringing the first MRI machine to Burnaby Hospital. In addition, they provided crucial support towards the purchase of modern equipment used throughout the hospital, including a portable X-ray unit, a Holmium Laser in the Urology Department, and an arthroscopic video system. The impact of this new and innovative equipment has had a lasting effect on patients and medical staff throughout Burnaby, East Vancouver and beyond.

After losing Keith, in 2017, Betty continued to support the hospital. With son, Ryan, by her side, she kicked off the Foundation’s largest campaign to date by donating an amazing $8M toward the redevelopment of the hospital. And again in 2023 she continued her unwavering support by generously offering to match all contributions, up to $4 million, catalyzing community involvement in the vital redevelopment of Burnaby Hospital.

Betty’s $12 million donation for the beloved hospital honours not only her commitment to providing the community with the opportunity for better care to close to home, but also honours her late husband, Keith with the new Keith and Betty Acute Care Tower expected to complete in 2030. The hospital’s redevelopment will include a 12-storey tower, where patients will benefit from more enhanced services and cutting-edge advancements in healthcare. The upgraded medical imaging department will host state-of-the-art technology, and within the in-patient oncology unit, individuals battling cancer will receive care in a modern, comforting environment. The cardiac telemetry department will offer specialized cardiac monitoring and intervention, enhancing patient outcomes and the revitalized intensive care unit guarantees patients access to critical care services, prioritizing their well-being during times of acute medical need.

“Betty continues to champion philanthropy in Burnaby and beyond, inspiring our community with her ongoing generosity. The impact that Betty has had on countless lives within our hospital because of her desire to make a difference is immeasurable. We are honoured to celebrate such a milestone with Betty and wish her the happiest of birthdays,” shares Burnaby Hospital Foundation President & CEO, Kristy James.

“Sending the warmest birthday wishes to Betty! Over the years, her unwavering commitment to bettering the hospital has been remarkable and has funded life-saving equipment, bolstered the Foundation’s work in the community and supported many events. Seeing Betty at our annual gala is a cherished highlight for our board and me. The special bond the Foundation has shared with Betty and Keith is truly invaluable, and nothing brings us greater joy than honoring their legacy by putting their name on the new hospital,” says Steven McKoen, KC, BHF Board Chair.

“Betty and her late husband Keith’s investment in the future in our city has been inspirational. It has been my privilege to witness how their decades of support across numerous charities has made an incredible impact in this community. Betty’s willingness to lend a hand, and her passion for our community is a powerful example for all of Burnaby’s young leaders. It is my pleasure and privilege to wish her and her family all the best as they celebrate this amazing milestone,” shares Mayor Mike Hurley.

Join us in celebrating Betty Beedie and her continued legacy of a life well lived. We wish you many more years of health, happiness, and continued partnership in our shared mission of providing the best care possible, close to home. Happy 90th birthday, Betty!
