Burnaby Hospital: The Heart of the Community

Burnaby Hospital: The Heart of the Community

August 08, 2024

Having a hospital close to home often means it becomes a vital source of support for the community. This rings especially true for Burnaby-born, Lisa Tam.

Burnaby Hospital has been an important support system to Lisa, a consultant and volleyball coach, throughout her life. Nearly a decade ago, she underwent her first surgery as an adult to repair her ACL, an experience that naturally brought a wave of nervousness. “I was comforted at every step, including during intake and pre-op where nurses and doctors walked me through everything. The people who show up day after day to provide care and make patients feel comfortable are just amazing,” she gratefully explains.

But the Hospital’s role in her life extends beyond her own medical needs. It was there for her mother when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. “From our interactions with the cancer clinic to outpatient care, lab, the medical imaging department and eventually palliative care, we received nothing but consistent and compassionate care,” Lisa recalls.

Driven by a strong belief in supporting causes within her community, Lisa generously hosted a fundraiser in celebration of her most recent birthday where she collected donations to support the Foundation’s Bright Future campaign towards the redevelopment of Burnaby Hospital. “Every person is going to require the services from our healthcare system at one point or another. And right now, we have an opportunity to support the build and redevelopment of a hospital,” she explains. “Not to mention, there is no better time to donate than now when your dollar will have double the impact thanks to Betty Beedie and her son Ryan’s matching campaign.”

With Phase One of the redevelopment well underway and set to be complete in 2025, the changes will have an immediate impact on patient care. “This redevelopment is going to bring more services to Burnaby, increasing access to healthcare for our community. I’m excited that when people need care, they are going to get it. I’m also looking forward to seeing the use of more technology to improve the patient experience,” Lisa explains.

Lisa’s story is a testament to the profound impact a community hospital can have on the lives it touches. Burnaby Hospital isn’t just a place for medical care; it’s a haven of hope, compassion, and resilience. As the redevelopment progresses, it symbolizes a brighter future for all, ensuring that the hospital remains a place of support and provides care for generations to come.
