A Letter from Burnaby Hospital Foundation President and CEO

May 05, 2024

Every day, Burnaby Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) stands as a beacon of hope and healing for our community. Around the clock, our dedicated staff bravely navigate the chaotic landscape of urgent medical care, providing immediate attention to those in need. But we need your support to ensure we can continue to meet this demand and provide the highest level of care to every patient who walks through our doors.

As one of the busiest EDs in the Fraser Health Region, our team tirelessly cares for over 200 patients daily, despite working in facilities originally designed for far fewer. This overcrowding and outdated infrastructure present significant challenges, but our medical professionals rise to the occasion, continually seeking new solutions to improve patient care.

One such solution is the introduction of a dedicated triage physician to every shift in the ED, streamlining patient intake and reducing wait times. While traditionally managed by a nurse, our decision to enlist a physician emphasizes our commitment to innovation and reshaping the landscape of emergency care. Providing immediate access to a doctor at the point of triage accelerates processes as doctors can promptly address certain needs by prescribing medication or making referrals. This initiative is just one example of our dedication to enhancing efficiency and excellence, and it highlights our unwavering commitment to raising the standard of care in our Emergency Department.

But perhaps the true measure of our impact lies in the stories of those we serve. Take, for instance, a long-time Burnaby couple whose recent visit to our ED underscores the vital role our hospital plays in the community. Facing a frightening medical emergency, they experienced firsthand the compassionate care and dedication of our staff, despite the hectic environment.

Although they haven’t needed the hospital’s support often, they deeply appreciate knowing it’s there when they do. Upon their most recent visit to the ED, the husband was experiencing chest pain, a harrowing ordeal for both him and his spouse. Their arrival painted a vivid picture of a busy Emergency Department — every chair occupied, the hallway lined with patients in beds, an atmosphere teeming with activity and urgency.

Despite the chaos, swift action followed. The husband underwent an array of tests — X-ray, ECG, blood work — promptly initiated to assess his condition. With results quickly in hand, the triage doctor delivered the reassuring news: his case wasn’t life-threatening. This timely communication brought immense relief to the couple. As a precautionary measure, he underwent a comprehensive examination by an emergency physician before being given the all-clear for discharge. Their gratitude for the diligent care provided was echoed in their repeated expressions of appreciation.

In the midst of the whirlwind, the couple admired the compassion and professionalism of the ED staff. Amid the flurry of activity, they found solace in an environment where warmth, empathy, and professionalism shone brightly.

In moments of medical uncertainty, reassurance comes not just from swift action, but also from the unwavering commitment of caregivers who leave no stone unturned. This couple’s experience demonstrates the importance of quality care and the profound impact it has on individuals and families in times of need.

It also reinforces the critical need for a high standard of emergency services close to home — a need that will be met through Burnaby Hospital’s redevelopment. With plans to expand and upgrade our ED, we aim to provide our dedicated teams with the modern facilities and equipment they need to continue delivering exceptional care to our community, including 10,000 square feet of additional space and 30% more treatment bays.

Today, you have the extraordinary opportunity to make a difference in the lives of countless individuals by supporting this historic project. Thanks to the generous matching donation from Burnaby’s own Beedie family, your contribution will have double the impact, bringing us one-step closer to realizing our vision of a state-of-the-art Emergency Department.

Please consider making a gift today to ensure that Burnaby Hospital can continue to provide the best care possible to you, your loved ones, and your neighbors. Your donation could be the lifeline someone desperately needs in their moment of crisis, offering hope, healing, and a chance for a brighter tomorrow.

Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to our shared mission of serving the community. Together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of those who need it most.
