Postal Strike Puts Donations at Risk for Annual Holiday Fundraising Campaign
Burnaby Hospital Foundation faces a major setback in its fundraising efforts following the postal strike that has disrupted the timely delivery of its annual holiday mail campaign. With no end in sight, the strike threatens to cost the Foundation $800,000—urgently needed funds that were destined to purchase new and upgraded medical equipment for the hospital’s long-awaited redevelopment.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) strike, which began on November 15, 2024, came just as the Foundation was preparing to send out 58,000 holiday packages to current and potential donors. These mailings, timed to reach donors at the peak of the holiday season, included personal letters, a catalogue detailing urgent equipment needs, and heartwarming holiday cards designed by children of hospital staff. Now on hold, the Foundation was counting on this campaign to raise critical funds for the redevelopment.
“This strike has definitely delivered a devastating blow, but the real tragedy here is that we’re not just losing donations—we’re also losing a unique opportunity to maximize every dollar through a Burnaby family’s generous matching gift,” said Kristy James, President and CEO for Burnaby Hospital Foundation. “These are funds that will ensure our doctors and nurses have the equipment and technology they need to provide the best care. It’s an investment in the future of healthcare in Burnaby, and we can’t afford to miss it.”
Normally, the holiday campaign generates approximately $400,000—more than half of the Foundation’s annual mail-in revenue. The strike not only jeopardizes these crucial donations but also the matching funds, which together total approximately $800,000.
While the strike has suspended mail service, there are still ways for supporters to contribute. The Foundation encourages donors to give online at bhfoundation.ca, by phone at 604- 431-2881, or in person at the Foundation office located at 3935 Kincaid Street, Burnaby.
“The ongoing postal strike has stalled our efforts to reach our supporters and generate crucial donations, but as the holiday season approaches, we are hopeful—this time of year always has a way of bringing out the best in people,” said James. “And where there’s a will, there’s a way. Just like during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen how our community rallies together in times of need. We know that, with the continued generosity of our donors, we can pull through this and ensure our community has access to the exceptional healthcare it deserves.”
Burnaby Hospital Foundation extends its gratitude to all donors, sponsors and community partners who continue to show their generous support for our hospital and the long-standing service it provides to the community.
