Melody of Love raises $30,000 for Burnaby Hospital Foundation

June 19, 2018

The local Chinese community showed its generosity in a big way on June 16, raising an estimated $30,000 dollars for Burnaby Hospital Foundation at the 2018 “Melody of Love” Youth Charity Concert.

The concert, which took place in the James Cowan Theatre at the Shadbolt Centre in Burnaby, featured dozens of young performers – mostly teenagers – including singers, dancers and instrumentalists.

“It was a beautiful afternoon of generous giving, and incredible performances,” remarked Burnaby Hospital Foundation CEO, Kristy James, who had an opportunity to speak at the event alongside BHF Director of Finance & Operations, Claire Wang. “I was amazed at the talent and passion of everyone who graced the stage in support of our cause,” said James.

Now in its second year supporting Burnaby Hospital Foundation, Melody of Love is organized by the Burnaby General Association of Chinese Communities (BGACC), and the major sponsor is Scotiabank (Burnaby Main Branch), who also provided several volunteers for the day. This year the organizers worked closely with the dedicated members of the Foundation’s Chinese Ambassador Society to help boost and strengthen the charitable vision of the event.

Melody of Love also enjoyed strong support from all levels of government, with Burnaby City Counsellors James Wang and Pietro Calendino (acting Mayor) and BC Minister of State for Child Care, Katrina Chen in attendance, among others. Those expressing congratulations in writing included BC Premier, John Horgan; Burnaby MP, Peter Julian; and Burnaby Mayor, Derek Corrigan. Even the Consulate General of China in Vancouver, Ms. Tong Xiaoling, sent a warm message of congratulations.

Proceeds from the concert will go towards supporting upgraded medical equipment and technology at Burnaby Hospital and Fellburn Care Centre.
