Create a Legacy
When you make plans for a legacy donation, you are giving a future gift that will provide for Burnaby Hospital in years to come. Most commonly, legacy gift options are bequests (a gift in a will), gifts of life insurance, or gifts of retirement funds (RRSPs and RRIFs).
Legacy giving is a wonderful way to celebrate your lifetime and ensure that people in your community today, along with generations to follow, will benefit from quality health care.
The Legacy Society
We are honoured to help fulfill the enduring legacies of Legacy Society members; those individuals, whose estate gifts will support a brighter future in health care for generations to come.
The Legacy Society is the exclusive club by which Burnaby Hospital Foundation honours and recognize those who include Burnaby Hospital Foundation in their Will or estate plans with a gift valued at $5,000 or more.
For decades Burnaby Hospital has been providing quality care, close to home, to you, your friends, and your family. Your support as a Legacy Society member is a targeted investment in the most modern medical equipment, technology and facilities for our health care teams and for all of us. Together we can pave the way toward a brighter future in health care for generations to come.
As some of our most loyal and cherished donors, we recognize and gratefully acknowledge Legacy Society members on the Legacy Society Donor Wall.
See below for different giving options, or for more information please contact Kristy James, CEO, at 604.431.2881.
Charitable Trusts
Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) have been created to enable donors to make a gift of an asset, such as an investment portfolio, but continue to receive the investment income from the portfolio throughout lifetime. The donated assets are held in trust for the future capital beneficiary which would be Burnaby Hospital Foundation.

Will Bequests
A Letter of Peace or a Letter of Blessing can support the next generation. Adding a simple amendment to your Will, called a codicil, allows donors to leave a legacy to Burnaby Hospital Foundation that helps ensure a high standard of health care for your family, friends and everyone else in your community.
Bequests made through a Will allow you to make a contribution to the future of Burnaby Hospital, often a contribution that you couldn’t make during your lifetime.
Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s Legacy Society celebrates those who have planned a gift through a bequest in their Will.
A tax receipt for the value of the gift can be used to offset tax otherwise payable on a final tax return and on the preceding year’s tax return. Legacy gifts can be either a set amount or a portion of the residue of an estate.
Here are samples of Will Clause Language, which is information your lawyer will need. The sample Will clauses are intended for informational purposes only and should not be viewed as legal advice. We encourage donors to seek legal counsel when making provisions for a charitable gift in their Will.

Real Estate
Donors can elect to gift a principle residence, investment or recreation property, or a farm property and receive an immediate tax receipt for the appraised fair market value of the real estate. A gift of real estate can make a significant difference without creating a negative impact on their cash reserves.
For more information please contact Kristy James, CEO at 604.431.2881.
Gifts of Insurance
Several types of insurance receive different tax treatment. A gift of life insurance enables donors to turn small donations into, ultimately, a much larger gift.
Also, donors who have the capacity to make large once-in-a-lifetime gifts can replenish their estate with the use of life insurance. Those with existing fully-paid insurance policies which they no longer need can donate the policy. Alternately, donors who no longer wish to make premium payments on a policy can donate the policy to Burnaby Hospital Foundation.

Retirement Funds
You can leave your RRSP or RRIF to Burnaby Hospital Foundation. There are two simple ways.
- Your financial institution will provide you with a Beneficiary Selection Form and you can designate Burnaby Hospital Foundation on the form.
- You can designate your estate as the beneficiary and leave a gift in your Will equal to the value of all or part of your retirement funds.
In both cases, your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of your donation.

Will Power
Burnaby Hospital Foundation is participating in a new Canada-wide initiative designed to inspire Canadians to think differently about giving, and consider a gift to charity in their Will.
If enough Canadians got on board and donated just a small percentage of their estate to charity, it could mean as much as $40 billion for the causes we all care about.
