Celebrating William McCarthy: A Community Leader
Burnaby Hospital Foundation is thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievements of Burnaby businessman and philanthropist, William McCarthy, who has been a committed advocate of the Foundation’s mission as Fundraising Cabinet Chair. His dedication to community healthcare and tireless efforts in supporting the Foundation have left an indelible mark on Burnaby and beyond.
Over the past twenty years, Bill has chaired every major fundraising campaign at Burnaby Hospital, including the current Bright Future campaign, where his son, John, also serves as a member of the Fundraising Cabinet. Together, they have played a key role in the success of Burnaby Hospital’s redevelopment campaign, the largest Capital Campaign in Burnaby’s history. This campaign is not just a professional commitment for the McCarthy family; it is deeply personal. Burnaby Hospital holds a special place in Bill’s heart, as it is where he, his wife Dolores, and their three children, including John, were born and continue to rely upon the care it provides.
Under Bill’s leadership, the Foundation embarked on its largest fundraising campaign to date, raising a record-breaking $52 million. This milestone was made even more significant by the McCarthy family’s own generous contribution of $1 million and $5 donation to the Burnaby Hospital BC Cancer Centre. Bill’s ability to rally the community, bring in new donors, and amplify the message of supporting our healthcare heroes has been nothing short of inspirational.
Beyond his role in the Foundation, Bill’s commitment to community service has been recognized at the highest level. On September 4th, the Honourable Janet Austin and Deputy Premier Mike Farnworth honored Bill with the Order of British Columbia 2024, the province’s most prestigious accolade. This recognition is a testament to his outstanding contributions and the positive impact he has made in the lives of so many.
