Over $50k raised at Inaugural Mayor’s Lawn Bowling Tournament
The Burnaby community came together on June 6 for a spectacular display of sportsmanship and philanthropy at the highly-anticipated inaugural Mayor’s Lawn Bowling Tournament. The sold-out event, in partnership with the City of Burnaby and attended by Mayor Mike Hurley, witnessed an outpouring of support from enthusiastic participants and generous donors, making it a resounding success.
The tournament raised over $50,000 to support the redevelopment of Burnaby Hospital, a project that will rejuvenate the 70-year-old facility. With the goal of combining friendly competition with a worthy cause, the event received immense support from individuals and local businesses.
“Our very first Mayor’s Lawn Bowling Tournament was an exceptional demonstration of our community’s spirit and willingness to come together to support local healthcare,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “The Foundation, as well as all our participants, sponsors, business leaders, donors and volunteers, show such dedication to helping make a positive impact in our city.”
With enthusiastic cheers, exciting team costumes and a delicious barbecue supplied by Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society, the tournament was filled with excitement. The Foundation also shares their gratitude for the generously donated space at the South Burnaby Lawn Bowls Club where the event was hosted.
The event introduced friendly rivalries, new community connections and thrilling moments of triumph. Dageraad Brewing came out on top as the first ever winners of the tournament. Participants embraced the spirit of camaraderie, developing connections with fellow players, sponsors, donors, and spectators, while also raising awareness for the important work carried out by Burnaby Hospital Foundation.
With no major renovations in the last 50 years, Burnaby Hospital has reached its capacity. Facilities that were constructed to serve a small community now support a growing and aging population of 500,000 people in Burnaby, East Vancouver, and the surrounding areas. The Burnaby Community Emergency Department is the second busiest in the Fraser Health Authority region, seeing 83,000 visits, trailing only Surrey Memorial Hospital in number of visits.
“Witnessing the Burnaby community come together in such a remarkable way fills us with immense gratitude,” said Kristy James, Burnaby Hospital Foundation President & CEO. “Local healthcare facilities are a crucial pillar of a healthy community and Burnaby Hospital relies heavily on donations from our community to ensure their health and vitality. The Foundation is deeply appreciative of the community’s commitment to support outstanding healthcare now, and in the future.”
The Foundation extends their thanks to all event attendees, partners and sponsors, and encourages the public to learn more about and donate to the redevelopment campaign.
