Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) refers to an increase in size of the prostate gland in middle-aged and elderly men. It's estimated that 50 percent of men have evidence of BPH by age 50 and 75 percent of men have BPH by age 80. Surgery is a common treatment for BPH and Burnaby Hospital's busy urology department performs many transurethral prostatic resections to treat BPH. While this is a very effective treatment for BPH, the procedure is done with spinal or general anesthetic, and requires the patient to remain overnight in hospital. By acquiring a Green Light Laser, our urological surgeons can care for more patients without the need for hospitalization, allowing the patient to return to normal activities in a faster time frame.
