Burnaby Hospital has a very busy surgical department. Last year, we performed 9,546 surgeries and this year we expect to be even busier. Video assisted surgery, also called minimally invasive surgery, is a technique that uses specialized surgical equipment which allows surgery to be performed through small incisions. And our surgical department was the first in our health region to perform video assisted surgeries for a wide variety of procedures like liver, kidney, and gall bladder removals, to hysterectomies and prostatectomies. With a Laparoscopic Video System, patients reap the benefits of video assisted surgeries, which include less pain, faster recovery time, and less patient time in hospital.
