Burnaby Hospital's Cancer Centre Turns 18
Burnaby Hospital's Cancer Centre looks back at 18 years of caring for patients battling the disease.

There are very few people who can claim their lives have not been touched by cancer. Whether it is you personally or a loved one who has been touched by this disease, a cancer diagnosis is always devastating. You also know how important treatment and care is for both the patient and their family.
At Burnaby Hospital’s Cancer Centre, patients can expect to receive a thorough medical assessment to allow staff to create the most effective treatment plan possible for an individual. Patients can also expect to meet with a whole team of medical professionals such as oncologists, Drs. David Stuart, Wendy Lam, and Simon Yu, pharmacists, chemotherapy nurses, social workers, dieticians, and dedicated volunteers who are all on-hand to assist.
Through a variety of resources, the Centre has also helped patients access volunteer drivers who can transport patients to and from their treatments, relaxation therapy sessions, and support groups. Many patients have found additional support services an invaluable part of their care.
When the Cancer Centre first opened it’s doors 18 years ago, it was built to care for 1,800 patient visits a year. But with each passing year, services have continued to grow until literally bursting at the seams.
And because of the generosity of people like you, the Cancer Centre celebrated a new and expanded space on the first floor of Burnaby Hospital in 2004. Today, doctors and medical staff now see almost 12,000 patient visits a year—an astounding 566 percent increase in visits since the Centre first opened in 1993.
Thanks to people like you, the Cancer Centre continues to provide excellent patient care. This year will mark the 18th anniversary of Burnaby Hospital’s Cancer Centre. And although the Centre has seen many changes over the years, one thing remains unchanged; the steadfast belief in a holistic approach for the people they care for.
