Giving is in Her Nature

Meet Reine Hitchen. She’s lived in Burnaby for over 53 years. Reine retired from many years in banking, and has for the last 10 years, volunteered with Burnaby Hospital’s Auxiliary, working as the hospital gift shop manager and buyer.
Reine knew Burnaby Hospital very well, even before she became a volunteer. Her three children were born there, as were her three grand children. She has also had several surgeries at Burnaby Hospital and has always been impressed with the level of care she received.
“I’ve always been very well treated at Burnaby Hospital”, says Reine. “The staff are all wonderful, and they provide excellent care. I give donations to the hospital because I think the hospital needs it. I want to give back.”
For several years, Reine would give a generous donation at the end of each year. But in 2008, she decided to do something a little different and changed the way she supported the hospital.
“I’d read about monthly giving in several of the Foundation’s publications, and decided this way of giving might be perfect for me”, remembers Reine. “I was always worried I’d miss reading the annual letter, or forget to send in my cheque. Signing up was easy, and with direct debit, the donation goes in every month without me doing anything.”
Reine also found by changing to monthly giving, it was easier on her budget. By giving a smaller amount each month, she is able to give a bigger gift to the hospital and help purchase critical equipment the hospital needs.
“I get a lot of pleasure out of giving, whether it’s my time or my money,” admits Reine. I really enjoy working with the other ladies in the hospital gift shop, and
I love buying the merchandise. It’s very interesting to me to see what sells and what doesn’t. But best of all, it’s wonderful to know that what I am doing is helping the hospital and the community at large.”
Giving is definitely in Reine Hitchen’s blood. Whether it’s to her church, the hospital, or the child she sponsors overseas, in her mind it’s simply the right thing to do.
