The Gin Family Needs Your Help to Purchase a Gastroscope for Burnaby Hospital
Shown (L-R): Jack, Sylvia, Sarah, Matthew and Michael Gin are rallying the community to support Burnaby Hospital and help purchase a new gastroscope.
ANNOUNCEMENT | March 27, 2013
The Jack Gin Family Foundation needs your help to send a special birthday gift to Burnaby Hospital to celebrate its 60th anniversary. They are calling out to the community to help purchase a new gastroscope to empower hospital staff with this critical state-of-the-art equipment.
“We are part of the Burnaby community, and Burnaby Hospital has been our family’s hospital for years,” says Jack Gin. “I know from personal experience the importance new camera technologies can have in diagnosing health issues because of the advancements in clarity and accuracy. We feel it’s important to give Burnaby Hospital the best tools to help patients. It’s important for all of us in the community to invest in the hospital that cares for all of us. We hope everyone will join us in buying the gastroscope. Big or small, no matter what size the donation is, together we will make that donation have twice the impact!”
A professional engineer and entrepreneur, Jack Gin has always had a passion for cameras and the latest in technology. He founded Extreme CCTV in Burnaby (now known as Bosch Security Systems when it was acquired in 2008) and understands how new developments in state-of-the-art technology like a gastroscope can make a substantial difference in what physicians can see—which translates into the ability to catch medical conditions sooner and treat them faster.
The gastroscope costs $20,000 and the Jack Gin Family Foundation will match all community donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000 to purchase it.
To make a donation that will be matched by the Jack Gin Family Foundation, please donate online by clicking here or call Burnaby Hospital Foundation at 604.431.2881. Donations can also be mailed to: Burnaby Hospital Foundation, 3935 Kincaid Street, Burnaby, BC, V5G 2X6 (please indicate a designation of “Gastroscope” on your donation).
What’s a Gastroscope?
A gastroscope is a surgical device used by physicians to view a patient’s gastrointestinal tract. It uses fiber optic technology that produces light to allow it to work like a camera and helps diagnose conditions of the esophagus, stomach and portions of the small intestine. The gastroscope is also able to take tissue samples for biopsy as well as administer certain medications to treat various medical conditions and correctly place feeding tubes.

Planning process launched for Burnaby Hospital site
ANNOUNCEMENT | April 27, 2012
BURNABY – Fraser Health in partnership with the Burnaby Hospital Foundation has commenced a High Level Master Planning process for Burnaby Hospital to develop a clear vision for the expansion, improvement, and delivery of health services at Burnaby Hospital. Once complete, the plan will guide capital decisions for hospital improvements and future expansion opportunities on its existing site. Estimated cost of this first stage planning process is $230,000.
Over time, the hospital has changed in response to the demands of healthcare, the rise of technology, and the ideas of the clinical community. A first step in the redevelopment of the Burnaby Hospital campus, the question that the High Level Master Plan strives to answer is how to knit the hospital’s proud past with a bright future?
To gain a clear understanding of future opportunities, Fraser Health will undertake a comprehensive process to ensure all interests – internally and externally - are heard. A team of architects and planners will then interpret this information into several space and development options. These options will show how the hospital site can develop in distinct phases to the year 2030. This process will run until fall 2012, at which time recommendations will be made to the Ministry of Health for consideration.
In addition to site specific issues and opportunities, the planning team will be looking across the Burnaby community to ensure that potential growth of the hospital is connected to a broader Burnaby health planning process, which would include Burnaby Hospital’s connection to the Fraser Health network of hospitals and community health centres throughout the region.
Fraser Health is conducting high level master planning exercises at several of its community hospital sites including Delta Hospital, Peace Arch Hospital, and Eagle Ridge Hospital. This combined activity will enable Fraser Health to clearly articulate the role of each community hospital and better prioritize capital investment and facility improvement opportunities.
