From the Intern’s Desk…

Dear Readers,

My name is Rebeca, and I joined the Burnaby Hospital Foundation team in May as a Marketing & Communications Intern. Today, I was asked to share my experiences with you on this blog. This will be my first time writing for a blog, and I am excited to share with you what my internship here has been like so far.

Hoping to gain more experience with the not-for-profit world before I graduated from UBC, my first month working with the Foundation gave me the opportunity to help with the Foundation’s golf tournament, The Slice, as well as with the Human Touch publication produced twice a year – both of which have been amazing learning experiences! Working with fundraising events such as The Slice is great because I know that the funds we raise will help Burnaby Hospital become a better place. I also thought that by doing this, we could strengthen the community – but what I had not expected was to see what a vibrant a community already existed at the hospital.

I first became aware of this strong sense of community when I noticed the large presence of volunteers at Burnaby Hospital. I expected to see hospital staff and patients, but I never thought I’d see so many volunteers! There are numerous volunteers here in the Foundation office, and many more in several different areas of the hospital. There are volunteers of all ages and from different backgrounds. It’s great to see so many people giving back to the community.

For me, this is one of the things that make Burnaby Hospital so special.
